The writer Daphne du Maurier, lived locally and is perhaps most famous for her novel "Jamaica Inn". The title of another of her novels, "The House on the Strand" is a translation of the word "Tywardreath" and refers to the priory that once stood here and was one of some 350 such religious houses in Europe administered from Cluny in France.
