Recollections of an old inhabitant

The Flower Show existed here for nearly a hundred years, and was the event of the year, with its 'stamens' as they used to be called, stalls for sweets, fruit and lemonade; the limpet & winkle man, who used to provide the vinegar to sprinkle on the limpets and the pink to pick out the eye. Then there was the chip potato man, all spotlessly clean, with his travelling van providing 'haporths' and 'pennorths' of chips in a bag with vinegar, salt & vinegar to taste. Then the sideshows with all their many attractions and of course the flowers themselves; the vegetables too were of a high standard.

The streets were gay with bunting, the Church bells ringing in the early morning and an air of festivity and expectation all through the village.

Then the Sunday School treat once a year for the Church children at Menabilly travelling in farm wagons with a lot of singing and joy.

Then tea in a long building, and what a tea! Plenty of splits buttered and jammed with sumptuous cream, cakes and a present to bring home, as well as a large saffron bun.

The Sunday School prizes for the best attendance for the year, presented by the Squire and his Lady, Mr & Mrs Rashleigh of Menabilly.

Mine girls would sometimes get a day off and a number of them would visit some other town, each paying a little towards a conveyance and waling the rest of the way.
