The Jug

There was in the village a jug, which, though not much in itself yet has a history.

Long, long ago it was the property of an official of the parish church, a clerk, whose duties were to recite the responses and the Amens in a clear voice, also to keep order during the services.

This jug naturally was never seen inside the church, but was kept at an inn on the opposite side of Church Street, called the Bassett Arms, now "Hill House".

The story goes that the landlord of the inn saw that the jug was filled just at the time when the vicar would be in the pulpit for the sermon. The old clerk would hurry across the road, drink the contents and return to his sea in time to recited the last "Amen". This happened with due regularity for many years.

The jug has now been presented to the Old Cornwall Society by John Lydiatt.
