Jubilee Celebration Day Poster
"The celebration of the Queen's Jubilee was conducted at Tywardreath with great energy. The town was gaily decorated with arches and a large supply of bunting; Mrs Baker made some tasteful devises for the former, and the latter were displayed by Mrs Peard, Mr Polkinghorne, Captain Hocking and others. Work was abandoned and pleasure substituted. The bells rang merrily at five o'clock in the morning. the Rev.S V Baker conducted services in the parish church, preaching a most suitable sermon to an overflowing congregation; the Rev. W Hindes, Wesleyan minister, assisted in reading the lessons. A procession was then formed outside the Board schools, and to the strains of the Par Volunteer Band and the Tywardreath Fife & Drum Band perambulated the various streets of the town to a field kindly lent for the occasion by Mrs Thomas of New House Farm. Here the young folks heartily sang the National Anthem, Mr Bailey conducting.

Mr E Rashleigh sent, by request, a telegram of congratulations to Her Majesty on her Jubilee.
A gratuitous tea was then partaken of by the parishioners, over 1500 sitting down to tables presided over by about 50 ladies, who kindly gave their services and lent tableware. Medals commemorative of the event were distributed to the children. After tea, various races and games were provided for the young folks, most of whom carried away prizes. Other features were, climbing the greasy pole etc." (From a newspaper cutting 22 June 1897)
