Subsidies in Reign of Henry VIII - 1525 & 1543

The subsidy rolls were introduced in 1489 and then extended in 1512 and 1514/16. These two taxes included a poll tax for those not under the general taxation due to being under the minimum.

Wolsey had to find a way of gathering money in which to finance the war with France. In 1522 he ordered a survey (both spiritual and temporal), also with a military muster which was the supposed reason for the survey. Men were supposedly being valued for the ability to provide armour but in reality it was used to raise money on everyone with goods over £5 and income from hand of £1 or more.
